Users Coming Off Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that people who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People buying such medications should be informed of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about 18 months.

Comparing Treatments

The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Scientists note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally have a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Experts believe the way of the drugs accounts for the heightened regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Disease?

The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals argue that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

People who have stopped the jabs describe a powerful return of appetite.

"It was like something that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Growing Interest

Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among women than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits relies on integrated lifestyle management.
