The Eurovision Song Contest Was Once a Campy Joy – However It Has Become a Strategic Method to Sanitize Conflict.

An new term emerged a few months after the start of the military campaign against Gaza. Referred to as WCNSF, it signifies “Injured child with no living relatives”. This acronym is unique to Gaza, as stated by doctors such as child health specialists. Ordinarily, it is rare for physicians to care for a young patient who has seen the death of their complete family. However, there has been nothing “normal” concerning the widespread destruction in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been wiped out and the number of children who have lost limbs exceeds that of any other place in the world. No sense of normalcy about numerous doctors coming back from a sea of ruins with testimonies of children being systematically aimed at.

A Hell on Earth Regardless of a Supposed Ceasefire

Conditions in Gaza persist as an utter catastrophe. Essential medical supplies are failing to reach those in need, and international watchdogs have stated that genocidal acts are ongoing. Authorities rejects these accusations, consistent with how it disavows all charges it is accused of. Yet as grieving children who lost parents are now suffering from the cold in makeshift tent camps, there is some ostensibly positive news: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from continuing with its professed goal of “unity and cultural exchange.” The contest will continue to roll out a welcoming platform for Israel, despite the fact that a number of European countries have now pulled out in protest. Because this, we are told, is what international harmony looks like.

Historically, Eurovision excluded Russia from competing in 2022 due to the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza is completely different.

A Selective Vision

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was accused of irregular participation methods last year in what could be seen as an bid to politicise Eurovision. Ignore the report that a toddler was reportedly killed in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Neglect the data that aggression from Israeli settlers and forced displacement in the West Bank have escalated. Disregard the condition that international journalists are still prevented from freely reporting in Gaza. This entire context, apparently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Show Goes On Amidst Unimaginable Suffering

The contest reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – almost double the average life expectancy of an individual in Gaza today. The show may go on, but it will never be able to restore the whimsical pleasure it was formerly known for. An institution that was originally built on togetherness has now become a transparent instrument to provide a cultural veneer for conflict.
