  • Forest were previously qualified to the play-offs.
  • A Ferencvaros defender deflection gives hosts a opening period lead.
  • Igor Jesus' fifth goal in Europe puts Forest in command.
  • Forward adds a third with a clinical effort in the latter period.
  • The midfielder caps a excellent display with a penalty.

The Brazilian attacker found the net on two occasions as the Premier League side rounded off the group stage of the European competition with a convincing triumph against Ferencvaros at the home stadium.

The hosts had previously guaranteed a place in the next qualifying round and went into this game with a small chance of reaching the top eight, although they required several results to go their way.

That did not happen but this assured display will give Forest fans belief that their side can come through the home-and-away tie to reach the round of sixteen.

A Ferencvaros midfielder did hit the upright with a header inside the opening stages for the away team – who are managed by ex-Premier League forward Robbie Keane – but it was dominantly the home side from that point forward.

Forest opened the scoring in the 17th minute when a delivery from midfield was turned into his own net by Bence Otvos and added a second shortly after – Jesus squeezing a shot in at the back post for his 10th goal of the campaign.

Jesus' 11th came early in the second half when he timed a run perfectly to escape the defence and then drive an effort past the shot-stopper.

That goal ended Ferencvaros' aspirations of mounting a recovery and instead Forest added a fourth when the excellent James McAtee scored from a penalty after a infringement by the hapless Bence Otvos inside the penalty area on Dan Ndoye.

The Europa League qualifying round lottery takes place on Friday, 30 January (midday UK time), where Forest could be drawn against either Fenerbahce or the Greek club.

"It is not just the scoreline, there was that feel about it. I want these players to do collectively well, the whole squad," said Forest boss Sean Dyche.

"This is another step, but it is a good step."

Team Breakdown: Striker Shines as New Signing Observes from Stands

Jesus has been a standout performer for Forest in European competition this term with half of his 11 goals coming in the tournament.

His brace also means he has scored three goals in his previous two outings and the threat of a challenge for his place in the forward line could be providing motivation.

Napoli striker Lorenzo Lucca was recently brought in temporarily and he was watching this match from the stands.

That may well have been on Jesus' mind as he was impressive against Ferencvaros, producing two excellent goals and generally being a constant threat to the opposition backline with his pace and runs.

Jesus was not alone in impressing, with James McAtee producing his best performance in a Nottingham Forest shirt since signing from Manchester City in the previous transfer window, while Dan Ndoye also impressed.

Such positive showings will give Forest some fresh hope as they turn their attention to pulling further away from the bottom three when they welcome their London rivals on Sunday.

"All you can ask for is a reaction," added Dyche.

"I've never questioned their commitment or their loyalty or integrity. It is just go and show your quality.

"James was excellent and Dan was incredibly lively. Jesus got another couple and these are good signs."
