French officials have consented to start stopping small boats in the English Channel, following an extended period of pressure from the United Kingdom.

The change in policy follows the British leader sent a letter to the President asking him to support the initiative and stating there currently "lack any effective preventive measure" in the Channel.

French security forces have been authorized to stop the migrant vessels at sea, but only before they've collected their passengers, according to official statements.

French police have rarely acted to stop the heavily loaded boats departing from the coastline because it is viewed as excessively high a risk to both officers and civilians.

"It is crucial that we deploy these tactics this month... We have no effective prevention in the Channel."

Now, a French naval police spokesperson states personnel will begin taking action at sea, with the objective of safeguarding human life.

Significantly, the official ruled out the use of nets to stop boats, which had previously been reported as a potential method to snarl the engines of the vessels.

This determination to intervene at all is a major advancement, following a brief shift towards a stricter approach this warmer season, which ceased when the previous Interior Minister departed from office.

This was demonstrated in July, in the run-up to a meeting between the Prime Minister and French president, when French police were witnessed walking into the sea to slash the hulls of a boat.

Now French officials will again be permitted to stop boats prior to they collect migrant individuals from the beaches of northern France, however it's uncertain how the vessels will be prevented.

Strong winds are currently postponing the start of intervention operations and the people-smuggling gangs will be seeking methods to adjust to evade detection, as they have frequently done in the previous instances.

The Home Office and the Prime Minister's office have been contacted for response.
