At least thirteen people lose their lives and 98 injured in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.

The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose term concluded the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's economic vision for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The development of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were built at an rapid rate, beating predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had also sparked persistent questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an previous accident this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party demanded an immediate suspension in the building and running of all such projects.

This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."

In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these vital initiatives.
