Aerial Assault on United Nations Compound in War-Torn Sudan Kills 6 UN Personnel

A unmanned attack targeted a UN logistics base in war-torn Sudan on Saturday, resulting in the demise of six peacekeepers, per a declaration.

The strike occurred at a UN facility in the city of Kadugli, situated in the central region of Kordofan.

Eight other personnel were injured in the attack. Each of the victims are from Bangladesh, serving in the United Nations mission in Abyei.

“Attacks aimed at UN personnel could be war crimes under global statutes,” officials stated, calling for those responsible for the “inexcusable” strike to be prosecuted.

Military Blames Paramilitary Group

The government forces attributed the attack on the paramilitary RSF group, a notorious militia that has been at war with the military for dominance over the country for more than two years.

The attack “shows the destructive nature of the paramilitary group and those behind it,” the army said in a communication.

Context of the Contested Region

The resource-abundant Abyei is a claimed region between Sudan and South Sudan, and the peacekeeping force has been deployed there since 2011, when the south became independent from Sudan.

Calls for an swift truce in Sudan were also expressed to allow “a comprehensive, all-encompassing and Sudanese-owned political process” to address the conflict.

Country Engulfed in Conflict Since 2023

Sudan was thrown into widespread violence in April 2023 when a political rivalry between the army and the RSF turned into full-scale combat in the city of Khartoum and other parts the country.

  • The war has claimed tens of thousands, a figure advocates regard as a major underestimate.
  • Recent fighting has focused on Kordofan, especially since paramilitary forces took control of El Fasher.
  • The war has destroyed cities and has been characterized by grave abuses, like widespread sexual violence and killings based on ethnicity.
  • These crimes have been labeled crimes against humanity by the UN and rights groups.
  • The war has also created the globe's most dire humanitarian crisis and pushed parts of the country into starvation.
